The bread, created and baked at Max’s Artisan Breads, is a healthy option for bread-lovers who don’t necessarily care for the taste of wheat bread.
“I had gone over to Max’s and discussed the need for some upscale breads for retail in our cafeteria,” said David Myers, assistant director for cafeteria and catering at Community Regional Medical Center. “Scott Stanley at Max’s showed us how you could make bread to order, and that’s when I remembered the C-Fit program.”
C-Fit is Community's employee wellness program. “The 'Fit' symbolizes a strong and healthy workforce (body, mind and spirit),” said Jack Lazzarini, director of occupational health and wellness at Community.
“Dave called me and said he wanted to bring in healthier, well-received bread for people,” Lazzarini said. “We gave Max’s a call to develop a bread we could market to those who don’t care for wheat or high-fiber bread.”
Instead of missing out on many nutrients that bleached, processed white bread lacks, the C-Fit bread was designed to be nutritious and tasty.
“The C-Fit bread has a nine-grain mix with additional flaxseed in it, and has honey and molasses in it for a little added sweetness,” said Stanley, owner of Max’s Artisan Breads. “This bread also uses a canola and olive oil blend. Average breads have sunflower oil in them, so this is a healthy oil alternative for the C-Fit bread.”
“We want to keep employees healthy,” Lazzarini said. “C-Fit provides opportunities for them to try and participate in new things for a healthful lifestyle.”
C-Fit offers free, annual health risk assessments, free wellness coaching and rewards and incentives to employees who choose to participate. The program also sponsors classes, clubs and recreational activities, like cycling and whitewater rafting, as a way to support employees in their desire to become healthier.
The C-Fit bread is available for purchase at each Valley Save Mart and Whole Foods, The Market and Bentley’s.
