The fund is designed to lessen the financial burden and help nursing students complete their studies on schedule. The scholarships are awarded to nursing students who are Community Medical Centers employees.
"The Alice A. Peters Nursing Scholarship program was established to ensure that Community continues to build a strong nursing force to meet the needs of our patients. Aunt Alice has always valued the leading role nurses play in a hospital," said Craig Apregan, Leon S. Peters Foundation board member and nephew of Alice.
In February 2002, a $300,000 gift from Alice A. Peters implemented this scholarship program. An additional matching gift fund was started four years ago by the Leon S. Peters Foundation to encourage employee support of the program. Employees responded to this matching gift program, contributing more than $130,000 to the fund.
To date, 76 nursing scholarships have been awarded (including this years recipients), resulting in 69 registered nurse graduates. Applications for next year are available in March, with a filing deadline of June 15.
