Art from the Heart helps HIV/AIDS program

More than 75 people gathered to enjoy wine, talented musicians and local art to support the fight against HIV and AIDS at Community Medical Centers’ Art from the Heart.

Community’s Special Services HIV/AIDS program raised more than $5,000 from the event on Sept. 22.

The proceeds directly benefit patient programs and help those who are unable to attain medication, medical equipment, transportation to and from the clinic. It also will help those who need rides to hospital visits and who need other necessities like food.

Sue Flammang, registered nurse and manager of Community’s special services said as time has gone on, the necessary funds have greatly diminished, and in some cases, disappeared altogether.

“Access to care is a huge obstacle for many patients, so assisting with transportation increases the likelihood that patients will remain in care,” Flammang said.

Community’s special services program is the largest provider of primary care, social service and support for people in the community living with HIV and AIDS. More than 2,100 patients have been treated through the program.
Services include primary and specialty medical care for patients, case management, psychosocial services and outpatient services for those of all ages. The program offers home visits and provides patients with the opportunity to participate in research, support groups, education activities, recreational events and consumer advisory committees.

Throughout the evening donated art pieces were auctioned off and an award ceremony was held to honor those dedicated to HIV and AIDS care in the community.

Award winners were Community’s Sue Flammang, Shirley Morton, registered nurse and case manager and Nogodar Martinez, hairstylist and local community service volunteer.

“We greatly appreciate all of the support we have received from the community,” Flammang said.
